A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The trend became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: joyful, varied, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
