A Tribute to Strength: What We Can Learn from the Brilliance of Accra Cultural Week.

Following in excess of 50 installments navigating the international Black diaspora, this represents a concluding column. The journey was deeply gratifying, and sincere gratitude extended to every one of the engaged followers.

Exploring Accra Cultural Week

Experiencing the exhibitions, presentations and performances of the festival, it becomes clear how exceptional art feeds and constructs a country’s heritage and character. The focal point was without doubt the artist's exquisite a profound exploration of ritual and time, which displayed his groundbreaking afrogallonism for all to see: a concept that converts yellow jerrycans into captivating creations, tapestries of golden hues. The exhibition was conceived as a homage to the endurance of the historic district, a venerable neighbourhood of Accra.

The community – predominantly home to the Ga ethnic group, a seafaring people – is furthermore where a great number of freed slaves came back from South America and made their home in the 19th century. Called the Tabom community, they brought Portuguese tongue and customs.

Throughout Jamestown, you can see a blend of architecture. Standing is a historic building, with its unique European-style brickwork and door arches. One can also see the iconic Jamestown Lighthouse, built in the 1800s and later featuring its signature red-and-white-striped appearance.

Traditions of Remembrance

Equally remarkable about Jamestown is the ever-present presence of funeral posters. Wherever you look, be it affixed to walls or on big signboards, you’ll see funeral details and phrases of loss. In Jamestown, similar to the rest of Ghana, memorial services are major communal events.

In the artist's breathtaking installation, all of the visual and auditory essence of Jamestown are captured – especially in the engaging shoreline piece. Within it, you’re soothed by the audio of the sea with sand on the floor, while shacks, hanging fishing nets and depictions of vessels celebrate its spirited, long-standing fishing community. However being present in this exhibition space, one cannot help but think of the heaps of discarded clothing that threaten the charm and peace of the region.

Apart from the Headline Act

Accra Cultural Week also features much more. Housed in an incomplete building at the local university, creator Sylvester showcased On the Other Side of Languish, an emotionally powerful, austere exhibition that included sculptures and artworks produced in collaboration with artisans.

Also featured was the prestigious art award for Ghanaian women creators. It showcased the inaugural exhibition of a recent winner, whose work references personal family archives to craft a depiction of life in Ghana after independence. The event also honored a latest champion, whose diverse work is intensely focused on the craft techniques of women in the Volta region.

An Enduring Legacy

While the diaspora has more and more been attracted home to west Africa during the colder season, a growing cohort are thinking about journeying earlier in the year to engage with the region’s cultural season. Between Accra Cultural Week and regional art fairs, what is evident are cultural ecosystems that are not simply new or “upcoming” but have built up an entire landscape that is here to stay.

Ultimately, the experience leaves one with a image of Accra that serves as a declaration for ecological stewardship and the preservation of culture. It is a powerful tribute to resilience in all its manifestations.
