An Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Man I Barely Knew Helped Me Land the Role That Altered My Path

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a companion. Because my friend was interested in starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a large 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I shared that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the institution – close to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I ought to seek a position with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The Iraqi student approached me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but straight off explained to my host that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where anything feels possible – she declared: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in so many ways. I would never have had the bravery or nerve to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
