Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
