California's Governor Confirms He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he will make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 elections are over.
"Yes, it would be dishonest otherwise," Newsom remarked when questioned about contemplating a presidential run after the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."
The governor's current term as California's leader wraps up in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he cautioned that any determination is still years away.
"Fate will determine that," he remarked.
Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary
He has emerged as a high-profile opponent of the Trump administration, using his social media accounts and championing a initiative that would increase the party's House seats in following GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has drawn criticism from political opponents.
Federal Funding Dispute
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom is indifferent about the state's residents in a Sunday segment on Fox News. Duffy announced plans to withhold taxpayer dollars from the state and suggested suspending the authority to grant trucking licenses.
"I'm about to pull $160m from the state," he declared, in the wake of a this week's tragic collision in California involving an unauthorized trucker that caused fatalities and casualties.
His administration pointed out that the U.S. government had reauthorized the worker's status on several occasions, which permitted him to obtain a CDL under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had previously indicated he was blocking $40m from California for not enforcing English language requirements for truck drivers.
Strong Response from the Administration
"Former D-list reality star, now transportation chief, still doesn't understand federal law," the governor's team responded in a recent comment countering the funding warnings. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads."
Public Opinion and Political Future
A recent poll revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters believed that the governor must consider running for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has grown to an mean of 33.5% from previous levels, while his negative ratings has dropped from an average of more than 40% to current figures.
Some time ago, the governor commented while on a trip several key regions that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He mentioned his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.
"The idea that a person who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, amazing," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I await who emerges in the next election and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the voters."
