Jailhouse Surprise: The FormerPresident Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison
He battled justice and the law prevailed.
Sixty days subsequent to getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for trying to “eradicate” the nation's democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro finally looks headed to prison.
Expected Jailing
The found-guilty plotter – who's been under house arrest in his mansion while a series of judicial steps and appeals unfold – is widely expected to be jailed in the near future, during increasing rumors that he will be sent to a notorious maximum security penitentiary.
Previous Comments on Inmates
Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the right-wing ex- soldier exhibited scant sympathy for the country's jailed individuals.
“Why should we offer those scoundrels a good life?” he once mused. “They deserve to be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to finish behind bars, you simply need is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”
Prison Destination Speculation
However the prospect of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has horrified supporters, four of whom this week toured the prison in an obvious attempt to discourage the judiciary from sending him there.
Izalci Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, said he expected the elderly politician to be jailed in the coming fortnight and worried his destination could be Papuda.
He asserted Bolsonaro’s acute gut ailments – the result of a life-threatening stabbing during the 2018 presidential election race – signified it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He cannot to manage if they move him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the quality of inmate food.
While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells holding forty prisoners: “That’s practically one square metre per detainee.
“We spoke to the prisoners and they protest, naturally, of the terrible food,” remarked the senator.
Supporters Voice Concerns
He is not the sole person expressing views prior to the ex-leader's predicted incarceration.
Authoring in a prominent publication, another ally, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” political career and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the greatest wrong in its record”.
“It represents an unfairness that gnaws the hearts of countless Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.
Varied General Response
That may be true due to the significant support Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. However his predicted imprisonment has also warmed the hearts of many others who believe he should be imprisoned for conspiring to prevent his successor from assuming office – and even plotting to have him killed.
The lawmaker, a politician for the incumbent administration's political party, stated: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be put in solitary confinement. No one wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We want him to obtain dignified handling – but dignified care behind bars. He must not persist being his personal jailer for his entire life.”
He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have for a long time applauding the tough treatment of convicts, had unexpectedly realized to their rights. “Recently has the far-right – which has always argued that civil liberties were not for offenders – opted to visit a prison to discover what conditions are actually like,” he stated.
“He is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, degrading handling”.
Likely Incarceration Facilities
Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently contains about fourteen thousand prisoners, his more likely location seems to be a nearby penitentiary for law enforcement and other “special” inmates known as Papudinha (Little Papuda).
His potential cell are much more pleasant than those in the main prison, although still a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the impressive presidential palace, about a short distance away.
According to reports, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate inhabit in Papudinha is about 24 sq metres – about the size of vehicle spaces – and contains a 130 square foot WC with a shower and a 12 sq metre terrace. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a set and additionally a cooler in his cell as long as they were provided by his relatives,” the report indicated.
