Larian Studios Clarifies Its Application of AI Tools for New Project
The team behind popular titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently unveiled its next major project, generating significant hype within the player base. However, follow-up statements from the company's figurehead have added nuance to the narrative, addressing the studio's philosophy toward machine learning.
AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute
In a recent clarification, the studio's founder outlined that the company is utilizing AI technology for specific supporting functions. These include enhancing pitch decks, generating early-stage concept art, and creating temporary copy.
Notably, Vincke made clear that the shipping material in the game will be created solely by human creatives. "Our team is developing everything ourselves," he said.
We are actively growing our roster of concept artists and are actively putting together dedicated writer rooms.
Since this area is being particularly called out — we currently have twenty-three visual developers and have roles to fill for additional talent.
All our efforts we do is incremental and designed to letting our team spend greater focus on actual creation.
Any machine learning application implemented properly is supplementary to a developer's routine, not a replacement for their talent.
Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision
The revelation of AI usage at first provoked unease among portions of the fanbase. In reaction, Vincke offered more detail on public forums.
"We use these tools to explore references, similar to we use search engines and art books," he explained. "During the initial brainstorming phase we use it as a simple sketch for layout which we then substitute with authentic illustrations."
He continued, "Our studio recruits artists for their inherent skill, not for their ability to execute what a AI generates."
Three Pillars of Practical Application
Vincke had earlier outlined the studio's practical method to this technology, defining its use into key pillars:
- Handling Monotonous Jobs: Areas like polishing mocap data, dialogue cleanup, and Larian-specific work like adjusting assets for various species.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using tools to quickly build rough versions of gameplay ideas to test concepts prior to complete development.
- Future Potential for Gameplay: Researching how AI could in the future enhance emergent gameplay, especially in managing dynamic reactions in a vast role-playing world.
He explicitly affirmed that key artistic domains — including music composition — are are absolutely not areas where the company is replacing human input. In fact, Larian is recruiting more in these very positions.
"We are neither launching a game with AI-generated content, nor planning on cutting creatives to substitute them with artificial intelligence," Vincke summarized.
