Mikel Arteta remains confident that his side can keep managing with player absences following disclosing that forward Kai Havertz remains out for several more weeks.

Extended Absence for German Star

The Germany international has been out since August after undergoing knee surgery. Originally slated to come back sooner, Arteta explained the player hit a snag when advancing his training and was unable to move forward “the next phase.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a team that is much more reliable and has greater depth,” Arteta said.

Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture

This news creates a dilemma for Wednesday’s home game against Brentford. Arteta must choose between persisting with Mikel Merino, who scored playing out of position against Chelsea, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return off the bench off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also in contention following a lengthy absence.

Fitness Doubts Persist

Further fitness issues involve defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Chelsea match. Therefore, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to continue in central defence for the league leaders.

Arteta believes the £250m spend on squad depth in the last transfer window has placed the club in a far better place to handle such setbacks.

Greater Options Key to Title Challenge

When asked if a larger pool of players was helping their league challenge, his response was positive. “Absolutely, since the current term has been worse in the attacking line, and now what’s happening with the backline,” he added.

“Our previous experiences taught us that we must deploy players in various roles, and they have to be able to perform various functions if we aim to challenge at the top. And the example of Mikel Merino.”

Arteta's Support for Frustrated Star

Addressing the setback previously mentioned by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave additional context. “He followed all protocols. He failed to advance to the required step and now it appears like we have unlocked that.”

Arteta expressed his keenness to see him return. “The team is keen to have him. Truly, it’s a player that, personally, I value highly for his contributions to the team, but his character, his personality. I observe his frustration on the sidelines.”

“His playing record is exceptional, he's usually fit, and I am eagerly awaiting to see him return with the squad playing because I think it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
