Outrage Surges as Former President Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Backlash
Personalities from across the political aisle and the entertainment industry are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his remarks following the shocking passing of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Online Post
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to social media to describe the late director as "anguished and suffering". In a post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Detention
Police have since announced the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the case. It is reported his bail was set at a substantial amount.
A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The response to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.
“What a appalling and despicable comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the remarks. She pointed to previous rhetoric from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from His Own Party
Some Republican lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being within families.
Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged members in his party to justify the statements.
Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy if Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence unequivocally following the shooting of another individual.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a element of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the session, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
