When I walk into the room, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his career in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

A Landmark Year and European Breakthrough

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to victory and being named best player.

Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives support to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.

Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the senior top prize down the line.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it instills confidence.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the game.
