The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about following this charming family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
