The people of Israel observe two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace negotiations advance
Citizens have assembled across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.
The assault led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our violent enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed official remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place around the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the families of people who died in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was respected across the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' negotiating teams gathered in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the plan.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the negotiations indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.
The representative explained the morning session concluded without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.
He added that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are striving to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Essential Matters in Discussions
- A permanent ceasefire
- The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies provision
- After-conflict management of the territory
Civilian Feeling
In the city's public square that day, young a woman - whose sibling endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "No location seems like home any longer and until each abducted person return not a single person will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everybody home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can commence recover," she added.
Near the prime minister's residence in the capital, people congregated to express their support for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states 48 remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator one woman explained: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that about 70% of the population prefer the hostilities to conclude in return for the liberation of the hostages.
Palestinian Conditions
At the location of Nova festival, grieving people came together to honor the dead.
From that location, the noise of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the severe Israeli bombardment continued.
In the urban center, attacks were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of the community, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"As the dusk falls, the anxiety appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are lying together, embracing, especially my little child who rests his head on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will return to us."
Health Situation
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had received the remains of six people by the daytime, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis said two more dead people had been brought there. One of them was killed by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the south region, health workers said.
