The Red Devils Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Munich was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the American league, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
