The Three Lions to Launch the European Championship 2028 Journey at City’s Home Ground
The England national team will initiate their Euro 2028 adventure at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they achieve the anticipated passage for a championship staged throughout the majority of the UK and the Ireland.
The Etihad Stadium has not hosted an English men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the visitors were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to stage the national team for their first match on June 10, 2028.
England are set to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley, but, should they win the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would occur at St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean starting the playoffs at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Opening and Demonstration
The championship was launched at an event in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. Senior figures from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were heckled as they arrived the site by approximately 50 protesters, who demanded Israel’s national side to be kicked out from global football because of the Gaza crisis.
Placards were held up with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Schedule
The inaugural fixture of the European Championship will be held at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will include the Dragons if they make it.
Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the final, which will be staged on July 9, 2028 with a commencement at 5pm.
It is hoped that an afternoon start, which will also be used for European club finals from the following campaign, will cater to families and help reach a broader range of audiences.
Participating Countries
The Ireland are scheduled to play their first game at the Dublin stadium and the Scottish team would follow suit at Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will participate in the qualifying tournament; two automatic spots will be held in reserve for any that miss out on Euro 2028 through the qualification path.
Locations and Playoffs
The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine tournament locations. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals staged at every host’s main arena.
The qualification draw will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it became clear the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on a date in late 2026.
Official Statement
“This will be a competition for the supporters and a festival of everything we love about the game – its emotion and power to bring people together.”
More than three million admissions, a all-time high for a Euro tournament, are anticipated to be made available to supporters.
