UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct personas, each with their own fears and drives. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core mechanic involves controlling the persona that surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one standing could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
