US Navy Commander to Update Congress as Cross-Party Scrutiny Grows Over Boat Strike

A high-ranking US Navy officer is set to provide a classified update to lawmakers overseeing the armed forces this week, as investigators examine a US strike on a boat in the Caribbean Sea. The incident, which reportedly targeted a boat carrying drugs, allegedly involved a follow-up strike that eliminated any remaining individuals.

Administration Defends Strikes as Defensive Measures

The administration spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, on the start of the week asserted that the follow-on engagement was carried out “as a defensive action” and in accordance with laws governing armed conflict. Cross-party examination has increased over a account that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth gave a verbal order in September to strike the boat.

Democrats have argued the allegations, first reported last week, could amount to a war crime, and GOP members have also expressed their concerns about the lawfulness of the attack on 2 September. The Congressional armed services committees have opened inquiries into the recent US military strikes on boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean.

“The Defense Secretary directed the naval commander to execute these kinetic strikes,” stated Leavitt. “The commander worked well within his authority and the legal framework, overseeing the engagement to ensure the boat was destroyed and the threat to the United States was eliminated.”

In her remarks to the press, Leavitt did not dispute the report that there were individuals who survived after the first strike. Her justification came following ex-President Donald Trump a day earlier said he “would not have approved that – not a follow-up attack” when asked about the event.

Mounting Legislative Unease and Administration Support

Monday evening, Hegseth posted: “Adm Mitch Bradley is an national hero, a true professional, and has my 100% support. I stand by him and the combat decisions he has made – on the September 2 mission and all others since.”

A thirty days after the strike, Bradley was elevated from head of Joint Special Operations Command to commander of USSOCOM.

Anxiety over the administration’s armed actions against alleged narcotics-trafficking vessels has been growing in Congress, but particulars of this follow-on strike shocked many legislators from across the aisle and sparked stark questions about the lawfulness of the operations and the broader policy in the region, particularly toward Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro.

The congressional members indicated they did not have confirmation whether the recent report was accurate, and some Republicans were doubtful. Nevertheless, they stated the reported attacking of individuals of an first rocket attack posed grave issues and deserved additional investigation.

White House and Military Officials Reiterate Stance

The White House weighed in after the president on the weekend vigorously supported Hegseth. “Pete said he did not order the killing of those two men,” Trump stated. He continued, “And I believe him.”

Leavitt said Hegseth had spoken with members of Congress who may have voiced some worries about the allegations over the past few days.

General Dan Caine, the chair of the military's top officers, also communicated over the weekend with the two Republican and two Democratic lawmakers heading the Congressional armed services committees. He restated “his faith in the experienced officers at every echelon”, Caine’s spokesperson stated in a release.

The release added that the call focused on “addressing the intent and legality of missions to disrupt illegal smuggling rings which threaten the safety and stability of the Americas”.

Congressional Leaders React and Pledge Investigation

The Senate majority leader, John Thune, on Monday broadly supported the operations, echoing the White House line that they were necessary to stop the influx of illegal narcotics into the US.

Thune stated the committees in Congress would look into what happened. “I don’t think you want to make any conclusions or inferences until you have all the facts,” he said of the 2 September attack. “We’ll see where they lead.”

After the news article, Hegseth wrote on Friday that “fake news is delivering more false, inflammatory, and derogatory reporting to undermine our incredible warriors fighting to protect the homeland”.

“Our ongoing missions in the region are legal under both American and global statutes, with all actions in accordance with the law of armed conflict – and approved by the most qualified military and civilian lawyers, up and down the military hierarchy,” Hegseth stated.

The Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, called Hegseth a “disgrace” over his response to detractors. Schumer demanded that Hegseth make public the footage of the strike and testify under oath about what happened.

The GOP lawmaker for the state of Mississippi, Roger Wicker, the chair of the Senate armed services committee, vowed that his committee's inquiry would be “conducted thoroughly and by the book”.

“We’ll discover the ground truth,” he added, noting that the implications of the allegation were “grave accusations”.

The September 2nd strike was part of a sequence executed by the American armed forces in the Caribbean and Pacific as Trump has ordered the buildup of a fleet of naval vessels near the Venezuelan coast, including the biggest US carrier. More than 80 people were killed in the series of attacks.
